We are excited to showcase a new body of work of danish-born artist Thorbjørn Bechmann. The exhibition takes place at Backyardarchive X Galerie Tassilo Usner showroom in Vienna.
Thorbjørn Bechmann's paintings exist in the space between sensation and understanding. His works do not explain; they invite. They do not illustrate; they evoke. In “This I Feel, But Do Not Know”, Bechmann continues his ongoing exploration of gesture, materiality, and the limits of language in visual expression. Marked by layered paintwork and an acute sensitivity to surface, Bechmann’s paintings embody a tension between control and surrender. His process is rooted in the immediacy of mark-making—a visceral, instinctive response to the act of painting itself.
The title of the exhibition hints at a paradox: the deeply felt yet unknowable nature of both painting and perception. What does it mean to feel something without fully grasping it? What is the role of intuition in artistic creation and reception? Bechmann’s works hover in this ambiguity, offering compositions that are both deliberate and spontaneous, structured yet fluid.
This is an exhibition about trusting what is felt rather than what is known. It is an invitation to step into the quiet, uncertain space where painting unfolds—not as a definitive statement, but as an ever-shifting experience of presence, vulnerability, and discovery.
